Did he know what he was setting in motion? Mark Angelo started BC Rivers Day in 1980. Twenty-five years later, it’s gone global, with the announcement last June of World Rivers Day (WRD). WRD complements the water-related efforts of the United Nations, which recently launched a ten-year initiative to raise awareness of water issues and to halve, by 2015, the number of people who are unable to access or afford safe drinking water.
Millions of people and thousands of international organizations were expected to contribute to the first World Rivers Day on September 25th. Here in B.C., where it all began, our communities were out in force.
