COVID 19 PANDEMIC RESPONSE: Reimagining the 3rd Annual Vancouver Island Symposium on Water Stewardship in a Changing Climate as a “Video Trilogy Series on Reconnecting Hydrology and Ecology” for delivery via YouTube on November 19 / November 26 / December 3

The third in the Vancouver Island Symposia Series on Water Stewardship in a Changing Climate was originally scheduled as a 2-day event that would have been held in the Comox Valley in April 2020, and would have been co-hosted by the Nanaimo & Area Land Trust (NALT) and the Partnership for Water Sustainability in British Columbia in collaboration with the Comox Valley Conservation Partnership.
In the age of COVID, adapting to the new reality of physical distancing has necessitated decoupling of the two program-days that originally constituted the 3rd Annual Vancouver Island Symposium on Water Stewardship in a Changing Climate – Comox Valley 2020. Decoupling means that:
- The Comox Valley Conservation Partnership will deliver Comox Valley content in free webinars.
- NALT and the Partnership for Water Sustainability are proceeding with a “Video Trilogy Series” in late 2020; and this will constitute the 3rd in the Annual Symposia Series.
On three consecutive Thursdays – November 19, November 26 and December 3 – the Video Trilogy Series will be delivered as a 90-minute online event.
Actionable Visions for “Reconnecting Hydrology and Ecology” in an Altered Landscape
“In the age of COVID, and at moment in time when in-person public gatherings are not allowed by British Columbia’s Provincial Health Officer and the only option is to go virtual, the challenge for everyone involved in delivering outreach-type programs is to provide participants with a unique and interactive experience via YouTube in combination with Zoom,” states Paul Chapman, NALT Executive Director, and Chair of the Vancouver Island Symposia Series on Water Stewardship in a Changing Climate.
“The series theme is Actionable Visions for “Reconnecting Hydrology and Ecology” in an Altered Landscape.”
“In embracing virtual delivery, our goal is to engage and inform the audience. Our desired outcome is to enhance their understanding of what it means to see the world around them as an interconnected system. We hope to point the way for making a difference through collaborative leadership. We define success as: Participants will be inspired to action.”
A Unique and Interactive Experience
“In presenting the Video Trilogy Series, we are blending technology platforms to provide an experience equivalent to viewing an engaging TED Talk video, yet allows for interaction with those who are leading by example in British Columbia. Immediately after watching the video, participants will be able to chat in real-time with the presentation team.
“Three videos, each 60 minutes in duration, are designed to be used as legacy resources that inspire action. Each is built around a ‘facilitated conversation;. Our focus is on the whole-system approach and restoring water balance in altered landscapes. The trilogy series will inform, educate and create understanding,” concludes Paul Chapman.
