In 2004 the Occidental Arts & Ecology Center (OAEC) in Sonoma County established the WATER Institute (Watershed Advocacy, Training, Education & Research) to promote an understanding of the importance of healthy watersheds to healthy communities. OAEC’s WATER Institute builds upon their many years of regional watershed research, restoration, advocacy, community organizing, and activism.
King County in Washington State became one of the first jurisdictions in the United States to adopt and implement a post-construction soil standard. Its regulation went into effect January 1, 2005. King County’s post-construction soil standard has changed the way developers plan and develop a site in unincorporated parts of the county.
Representatives of the British Columbia Inter-Governmental Partnership, Alberta Low Impact Development Partnership, and the Toronto & Region Conservation Authority met in Calgary on October 31, 2007 to define the framework for an Inter-Provincial Partnership.
The mission of the Alberta Low Impact Development Partnership is to protect and maintain the integrity of the natural environment while promoting the growth, prosperity and quality of life of Alberta’s communities. Implementation of low impact development practices will lead to healthier, more sustainable watersheds.

The City of Chilliwack’s Policy and Design Criteria Manual for Surface Water Management serves two purposes. It provides a comprehensive framework that will guide the development of individual Master Drainage Plans over a multi-year period; and it provides land developers with specific direction in undertaking the stormwater component of sustainable urban design.
CAVI is the acronym for Convening for Action on Vancouver Island. CAVI is a regional pilot program that is being implemented under the umbrella of the “Water Sustainability Action Plan for British Columbia”. The purpose of CAVI is to provide research and education for practitioners (primarily local government administrators, engineers, planners and elected officials) so that they can plan for sustainable water resources in the context of burgeoning settlement activity.

As a sponsor of ‘green value’ initiatives on Vancouver Island, the inter-agency Water Balance Model Vancouver Island Coordinating Team (VICT) participated in the 'Creating Our Future Workshop' that was an adjunct to the 2007 Gaining Ground Summit Conference.
Integated rainwater management planning is an approach that recognizes the complex relationship between the built and natural environment. This new planning approach integrates rainwater management with engineering, planning and the environment to reflect the values of each watershed and community.
Capitalizing on the enthusiasm and early momentum generated by the Okotoks Conference in September 2004, a number of Alberta agencies have come together to form the Alberta Low Impact Develpoment Partnership. The initiative is co-chaired by the cities of Calgary and Edmonton.
