SLC is the only federal research and development centre devoted entirely to the river ecosystem. Our specialists are involved in a multitude of studies and research programs aimed at better understanding how the ecosystems of the St. Lawrence River function and at keeping this knowledge up to date.
CEH Wallingford's mission is to: advance the science of hydrology through research, investigate through monitoring and modelling natural changes in the hydrological environment and to assess past, present and future effects of man's impact on all phases of the hydrological cycle, secure, expand and provide hydrologically relevant data, and promote the use of CEH's research and data.
FREMP is an inter-governmental partnership established to coordinate the environmental management of the significant aquatic ecosystem of the Fraser River Estuary in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.
The Environment Agency has a duty to secure the proper use of water resources in England and Wales. We monitor water in the environment, and issue 'abstraction licences' to regulate who can take water from the environment. These specify the amount of water someone can take from a location over a period of time. We also have a long term strategy for Water Resources that looks 25 years ahead and considers the needs of both the environment and society.
DEFRA is responsible for all aspects of water policy in England, including water supply and resources, and the regulatory systems for the water environment and the water industry. These include: drinking water quality,
the quality of water in rivers, lakes and estuaries, coastal and marine waters, sewage treatment, and reservoir safety.
