CHRONICLE OF GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE INNOVATION IN METRO VANCOUVER: “Natural assets support the delivery of core local government services, while doing so much more,” stated Wally Wells, former Executive Director with Asset Management BC

Note to Reader:

In November 2024, the Partnership for Water Sustainability in British Columbia released THE SYNOPSIS for the Chronicle of Green Infrastructure Innovation in Metro VancouverThe Chronicle is a sweeping narrative of the 30-year period from 1994 through 2024. The Chronicle is a layered package comprising four documents: the Chronicle of the Journey, Stories Within the Story, Synopsis and Executive Summary. The target audience for each layer is different.

The Synopsis is the third layer in the cascade. It is oriented to senior managers who have limited time to absorb what they need to know to make informed decisions. The Synopsis is visual and so can easily be skimmed in 20 minutes or less! This extract is adapted from pages S30 and S31.

Ecological Accounting Pillar addresses Loss of Riparian Integrity

“Everything comes down to one question: What is the dollar amount for the line item in a local government annual budget for community investment in M&M, i.e. maintenance and management, of a stream system? That’s why a local government needs real numbers for the financial value of their streams,” stated Tim Pringle, EAP Char.

Read the feature story posted on November 5, 2024: LAND PLANNING PERSPECTIVE FOR RISK REDUCTION ON STREAMS: “Urban streams are rarely managed as ecological systems or as municipal assets. Rather, they are sliced and diced to suit land development objectives,” said Tim Pringle, Chair of the Ecological Accounting Process (EAP)

Asset Management for Sustainable Service Delivery:
A Framework for British Columbia

“Asset management is a process for sustainable service delivery. The BC Framework is designed as a wheel as there is a beginning but no end to the process,” stated Wally Wells, former Executive Director with Asset Management BC.

“The role of natural assets in our communities is not well understood. In 2019, Asset Management BC published Integrating Natural Assets with Asset Management. As the Primer shows, significant work has been done on the integration of natural assets into the overall asset management program.”

Sustainability Service Delivery is the outcome of moving in steps along the Asset Management Continuum. In Step One, focus on constructed assets and get the Infrastructure Deficit under control. By Step Three, tackle the Riparian Deficit.
