'Convening for Action in British Columbia' partners release 'Beyond the Guidebook 2010' at the 'Dialogue in Nanaimo'
“We Are Convening for Action”
In June 2010, the ‘Dialogue in Nanaimo’ provided a high profile opportunity to formally launch Beyond the Guidebook 2010: Implementing a New Culture for Urban Watershed Protection and Restoration in British Columbia.
John Finnie of the Regional District of Nanaimo represented the ‘convening for action’ partners in making the announcement. John Finnie is Chair of Convening for Action on Vancouver Island, known by the acronym CAVI.
Six primary partnerships are collaborating and working as a team under the umbrella of the Water Sustainability Action Plan for British Columbia. The members of the team share a vision for improving the way communities develop land and use water.
The Action Plan comprises elements that holistically link water management with land use, development and resource protection.
“This is Our Story”
The Guidebook reference is to Stormwater Planning: A Guidebook for British Columbia. Released in 2002, this was a catalyst for action to implement a ‘design with nature’ approach to rainwater management and green infrastructure.
“Beyond the Guidebook 2010 describes how water sustainability can and will be achieved through implementation of green infrastructure policies and practices. Getting there relies on a change in mind-set. This is our story,” stated John Finnie.
“We believe that BC is now at a tipping point. Implementation of a new culture for urban watershed protection and restoration is within our grasp. Beyond the Guidebook 2010 sets the stage for development that is in balance with ecology.”
