Cowichan Water Balance Model Forum introduces "Living Water Smart" application to development community
In October 2008, the Cowichan Valley Regional District hosted the Vancouver Island Water Balance Model Forum in collaboration with the Inter-Governmental Partnership which developed this web-based scenario modelling and decision support tool.
“The Cowichan Valley is a pilot region for an inclusive and collaborative approach to building capacity through education and training,” explains Jay Bradley, VICT Chair, He represented the Province and provided the Living Water Smart context at the Forum. About the Cowichan Forum
The Forum was an outcome of the Cowichan Valley Learning Lunch Seminar Series, also a provincial pilot,” explains Kate Miller (CVRD Environment Manager), Chair of t
he Cowichan Valley Organizing Team, and a founding member of VICT. “We described the Forum as a hybrid-training workshop because the day was built around case study applications of the Water Balance Model. These provided the technical foundation for roundtable sharing, exploration and cross-fertilization of ideas on how to implement green infrastructure effectively.”

In this 4-minute clip, Jay Bradley introduces the Cowichan audience to Living Water Smart. “This falls under the Province's Climate Action initiative,” he explained. “In the coming years, the Province will be undertaking consultation and looking for partners.”
In this 1-minute clip, Rob Conway of the Cowichan Valley Regional District provides his concluding observations about the day: “The Water Balance Model provides local government reviewers with a measurable way of determining what is a good solution for a particular site.”
