Green Infrastructure

The MMCD Association is a Non-Profit Society, funded by BC municipalities and other users to bring well defined, systematic and continuously improving construction documents for construction of roads, sidewalks, sewers, water, traffic signals and street lighting.

Trees are becoming increasingly more valuable to cities interested in reducing their impact on the environment. Trees can cut energy use and reduce rainwater run-off and pollution.

The Green Infrastructure Partnership has announced that Corino Salomi will represent Fisheries and Oceans Canda on the Green Infrastructure Partnership Steering Committee.

The largest public park in Malaysia will be that country's version of London’s Hyde Park or New York’s Central Park. Located in Kuala Lumpur, the park will reflect Malaysia’s identity. It will be a sprawling green lung recreational park for city folks to relax in and enjoy Mother Nature. The park will change the image of the city of Kuala Lumpur as a concrete jungle.

New green building techniques beginning to take hold in Skagit County aim to slow that water’s flow. Examples of these techniques include rooftop gardens and vegetated strips of land between streets and sidewalks called “rain gardens.” The idea is to use the natural topography to help handle rainwater.

The goal of the Celebrating Green Infrastructure Program is to build regional capacity through sharing of green infrastructure approaches, experiences and lessons learned as an outcome of ‘designing with nature'. The program was launched in May 2006 in the Greater Vancouver region as a provincial pilot. The intention is that local governments on Vancouver Island and in the Okanagan regions will undertake similar initiatives.

The main focus of the 2005 Green Infrastructure Consultation Workshop was on proposed policy and technical communication guides for elected officials and senior managers, respectively. The objective was to solicit the participation of willing municipalities in developing content.

The May 2004 Green Infrastructure Consultation Workshop provided a timely and strategic opportunity to formally launch the Green Infrastructure Partnership and broaden awareness of the goals and objectives of the Partnership in developing a Model Subdivision Bylaw and Green Infrastructure Standards.

The issue of how to accommodate a doubling of the population in the high growth regions of British Columbia is the driver for implementing changes in the way we develop land and use water. Conversations with elected officials are yielding insights that are shaping implementation of Convening for Action pilot programs in three regions of British Columbia, namely: the Okanagan, Vancouver Island and Greater Vancouver.

The “Green Infrastructure Guide: Issues, Implementation Strategies and Success Stories” provides guidance on how local governments may, using legal and policy strategies, encourage or require more sustainable infrastructure designs. It refers readers to strategies, and highlights case studies of local governments that have already taken steps to incorporate a green infrastructure approach. The focus is on implementation mechanisms, issues and barriers, and on what lessons have been learned from experiences to date.
