British Columbia proceeds with Integrated Community Sustainability Planning Initiative

What is ICSP?

ICSP is a process for envisioning and planning for the long-term well-being of communities. As part of the 2005 Gas Tax Agreement (GTA), local governments in British Columbia have committed to undertake ICSP. The Ministry of Community Services has taken the lead on developing an initiative to support local governments with ICSP. The ICSP initiative aims to build local governments’ capacity to engage in innovative planning processes that incorporate sustainability principles and use integrated decision-making throughout.

ICSP emphasizes:

  • long-term thinking,
  • broadening the scope to plans,
  • integrating plans at various levels,
  • collaboration between sectors,
  • enhanced public engagement and education,
  • implementation of plans, and
  • monitoring and evaluation.
