Develop Tools and Talent; Focus on Outcomes

At the 2014 Annual General Meeting of the Partnership for Water Sustainability in BC, Kim Stephens (Executive Director) provided the audience with a perspective on what the Partnership had accompanied over the past decade. Then he looked ahead 10 years. The theme for his presentation was Develop Tools and Talent; Focus on Outcomes.

Kim Stephens_Oct-2014_DSC_0492_120p“Throughout the past year, the Partnership has celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Water Sustainability Action for British Columbia, released in February 2004,” stated Kim Stephens. “This is a significant and noteworthy milestone. The 10th anniversary has provided us with the reason to reflect on our raison d’être and to look ahead to define a path forward for the next 10 years.”

Starting Point for a Succession Strategy

The theme for the presentation by Kim Stephens was Develop Tools and Talent; Focus on Outcomes.

IMG_0466_Kim Stephens_Dec2014_500p“Tools, talent and outcomes go hand-in-hand. Future leaders will need to be equipped with the tools and experience that will enable them to make informed decisions. The Partnership’s leadership team is committed to a bridging and mentoring role over the next decade. We are here to guide.”

“Over the past year, we have been encouraged by the emergence of a generation that we anticipate will be the future leadership in local government. They represent planning, engineering and environmental management. These future leaders are 30-something, and are predominantly women. They are keen to learn, they collaborate and share, and they are passionate about ‘making a difference’.”

“Ongoing transfer of knowledge – from those of us who were key players or leaders in past processes or initiatives – is essential if there is to be continuity and consistency of understanding.”

Water Sustainability Action Plan

The genesis for the Water Sustainability Action Plan for British Columbia dates back to Spring 2003 when the vision and partnership concept first took shape for doing a 5-year update on A Water Conservation Strategy for British Columbia, released in 1998. Funding for Action Plan development was then provided by the Province of British Columbia. The Action Plan provides a partnership umbrella for on-the-ground initiatives in the local government setting.
