Accessing Ground Water Sources

Information in factsheet format outlines sourcing and options to develop ground water sources for livestock water use.

Ground water occurs both in rock and unconsolidated materials. The largest amount of water comes from unconsolidated materials. The permeability of the materials is one factor that determines the amount of water which can be obtained from a well.

To protect ground water quality, wells must be located and constructed so as to avoid contamination from some farm practices.

Good information on environmental issues, ground water sourcing, well construction, use and maintenance is provided in this factsheet which is available from the Sustainable Agriculture Management Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture.
