Stormwater Management: Using trees and structural soils – manual cover (360p)
Researchers know that urban forests, like rural forest land, can play a pivotal role in rainwater/stormwater mitigation. Structural soil reservoirs may provide new opportunities for meeting engineering, environmental, and greenspace management needs in urban areas.
“I have been teaching about the water cycle, water balance components and computations. So the students have a good understanding about hydrologic concepts, equations and computations. The best way to quarantee a balance between nature and urban development in the future is by teaching future planners and decision-maker today about cutting edge technology for designing with nature,” stated Dr. Ineke Kalwij. “Jim Dumont demonstrated how to integrate all of the technical things that my students have been shown in class. In his presentation, Jim’s emphasis was on the information and techniques that are important in providing solutions and value to society.”

When landscape architect Craig Cawrse set out to construct a new building for his business in South Russell, Ohio, he also embarked on an effort to make it sensitive to the environment and to his residential neighbors.
One of the most celebrated features of the new High Point neighborhood is an elaborate drainage system which works to enhance rainwater management with the result of easing the pace of rainwater drainage into the Longfellow Creek watershed.
Rainwater management is about developing in a way that restores the function and value of trees, soil and open space in our communities. If we develop with long-term sustainability in mind, future generations can enjoy a vibrant city and clean and healthy rivers.
According to Ted van der Gulik, the rapid growth and success of the present second generation of the Water Balance Model has fuelled a level of user interest and need that has made it clear that the time has come for the next bold leap forward in the evolution of this web-based tool.
