Subsurface Stormflow

Subsurface stormflow is a runoff producing mechanism operating in most upland terrains. In a humid environment and steep terrain with conductive soils, subsurface stormflow may be the main mechanism of storm runoff generation. In drier climates and in lowlands with gentler topography, subsurface stormflow may occur only under certain extreme conditions (high antecedent soil moisture), when transient water tables form and induce lateral flow to the channel. While an important contributor to the volume of flow in the stream, subsurface stormflow is also responsible for the transport of labile nutrients into surface water bodies. Read More

On the Table:

This paper is about Canada’s water. Since the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1993 there has been pressure to allow trade in Canadian water. This pressure has increased with the establishment in 2005 of the Security and Prosperity Partnership. In a very real sense, Canada’s water is already “on the table” as our current legislation does not protect it from being traded away. Read More

Drinking Water from Forests and Grasslands – U.S.A.

The Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996 require every State to perform source water assessments of all public drinking water sources and make the results public by 2003. Forests and grasslands serve as sources of many public drinking water supplies, and managers of these lands are expected to participate in preparing assessments and to work with the public to assure safe drinking water. To help managers of forests and grasslands meet this requirement, this report reviews the current scientific literature about Read More

The Future in Every Drop – Polis Project

Foreword – Water. Canada. The words are as inextricably linked in our Canadian culture as maple and syrup, or Stanley and Cup. And despite our reverence for the liquid of life, the evidence is compelling that we are over-using and abusing water, to our collective environmental and economic detriment. The fact that one in four Canadian municipalities has endured a water shortage in recent years should be as bracing to us as Read More
