Water Balance Model Partners are charter members of the ‘Partnership for Water Sustainability in British Columbia’
Recognition of Local Government Partners
The Partnership for Water Sustainability in BC primarily works in the local government context, with a focus on community and regional planning systems, to influence uptake of strategies that will integrate decisions about use and conservation of land with water sustainability outcomes. The guiding philosophy is design with nature.
Historical Context
“Early support and sustaining financial support by champion local governments that are Water Balance Model Partners was a foundation block in a building process that culminated in formation of the Partnership as a legal entity in 2010,” reports Ted van der Gulik (Senior Engineer, BC Ministry of Agriculture), Chair of the Water Balance Model Partnersip.
“The Water Balance Model is a core element of the Water Sustainability Action Plan for British Columbia, released in February 2004. Furthermore, it is one of the ‘twin engines’ driving an outreach and continuing education program that is building leadership capacity in the local government setting. The other ‘twin engine’ is the Water Bucket website.”
“Local governments in four regions of BC are Water Balance Model Partners. For most, their support of the Water Balance Model goes back almost a decade. In recognition of their long-term commitment, we were pleased to announce in March 2011 that these local governments are deemed to be charter members of the Partnership for Water Sustainability.”
“The Partnership is collaborating with local governments and supporting their interests so that they are informed about how to align regional and local actions with provincial goals,” concludes Ted van der Gulik.
